Thinking divorce? Here’s the FIRST thing you should do

Contact an attorney to find out your rights and obligations and how to protect yourself.

If divorce may be in your future, you need to educate yourself about what to do—and what not to do—to protect yourself and your children. The questions and worries are generally overwhelming, and emotions are usually running high. What do I need to worry about? What can I stop losing sleep about? Where do I go? How long does it take? What’s going to happen to my children? Where is everyone going to live? How are the bills going to be paid? Should I do mediation or something else?

Before you do ANYTHING, consult with a seasoned attorney and educate yourself first. Do not take any actions before you find out what the consequences of those actions might be. If you act first, you may unknowingly prejudice your rights.

Education is power. Find out the facts and get advice first. After you are armed with information and advice, you will be in a better position to make intelligent and informed decisions about what you should do, if anything, and when and how.
